Sparring rules

- Can you punch? Yes. Punches score 1 point.
- Prohibited techniques: no groin strikes and no grabbing opponents.
- Fouls and penalties: a third foul awards 1 point to the opponent. Excessive contact, unsportsmanlike conduct or illegal techniques may result in disqualification.
- Protective gear: gloves, foot pads and headgear are required for sparring.
- Match length: 2 minutes or a 5-point spread.
- Tie-breaker: sudden victory. The first clean point wins.
Board breaking rules
- Wood boards only.
- Competitors may attempt board breaking at up to 3 stations.
- Participants must provide their own boards and holders.
- Stations may include different techniques, such as hand strikes (for example knife-hand or palm strike), kicks (for example side kick or spinning kick), and power or speed breaks where they apply.
Forms rules
- Only traditional patterns are allowed.
- Judging is based on precision and technique, power and control, focus and intensity, and proper stance and movement.
Weapons rules
- Where weapons are included, traditional weapons only, such as bo staff, nunchaku and sai.
- Judging is similar to forms: based on form, control and precision.
