Your First Tournament

Your first taekwondo tournament

The Bro TKD Open is built to be a first tournament. Beginners compete against beginners, divisions are grouped by age and belt, and students from every school are welcome.

Is my child ready for a taekwondo tournament?

If your child trains in taekwondo, there is a division for them. Competitors are grouped by age (from 4 and under up to 16 for children), by belt rank (from novice to black belt) and, for sparring, by weight, so a first-timer competes against people at a similar level. Your child’s instructor is the best person to ask which events suit them.

Who can enter?

Students from any school, at any belt from beginner to black belt, and any age from kids to adults. You do not have to train at Galvan’s Martial Arts.

Which events should a beginner try?

There are four: forms, sparring, board breaking and weapons. You choose your events when you register. The divisions page explains how each one is grouped, and the rules page explains how each is judged.

What should you bring to a taekwondo tournament?

How does scoring work in sparring?

Kicks score 2 points and punches score 1. A match lasts 2 minutes or ends at a 5-point spread, and if it is tied, the first clean point wins.

How do I register?

Registration is on Smoothcomp, where the fees, divisions and deadlines are listed: register for the Bro TKD Open on Smoothcomp.
