What are the age groups?
Competitors are grouped into age brackets, such as:
- Children: 4 and under, 5–6, 7–8, 9–10, 11–12, 13–14 and 15–16
- Adults: 17–29
- Executive division: 30–39
- Executive 2 division: 40 and over
What belt can compete?
Every belt, from beginners to black belts. To match skill levels, divisions are separated by belt rank, often grouped as:
- Novice
- Beginner
- Intermediate
- Advanced
- Black belt
- Master ranks
Are competitors divided by weight?
For sparring, competitors may be grouped by weight class so the matchups are physically fair, especially at higher levels.
Are boys and girls separated?
Some divisions may be co-ed, especially for children. Most adult and higher-level divisions separate male and female competitors, particularly in sparring.
What events can you compete in?
- Forms: performance-based, often allowing different belt levels to compete separately.
- Sparring: typically divided by age, rank and weight.
- Weapons forms: may have divisions based on skill level.
- Board breaking: divisions based on skill level.
